Confession of the week... I’m extremely self-conscious about my neck! 😓

I go out of my way to avoid it being seen from the wrong angle. For photos and selfies, I make sure the camera is taking the shot from above so there’s no display of a double chin. When I’m face-to-face with my friends, I put my hand over my chest so they can’t see the lines there. And I often play with my chin so that no one can see the crepey skin below my jawline.

My aging neck is always on my mind.

It doesn’t help that I have a very short chin and, even when I was skinny, I was always prone to a double chin, made even worse as I packed on the weight. But then I lost 20 pounds in a very short time, causing my neck skin to become loose and crinkly. Sagging skin just doesn’t bounce back like it used to.

That was 2 years ago and the moment I knew I had to figure out how to tighten my neck skin without surgery.

Why without surgery? There’s something about a scalpel that makes me shudder and I’m not the kinda gal who’s into plastic surgery, probably because I’ve watched too many episodes of Botched.

And because I worked in the skincare industry for many years, I know that skincare works.

But before I could figure out how to reduce my neck aging, I needed to understand what causes the different signs of neck aging and create a plan.

Why Do Women’s Necks Age?

Your neck shows the signs of aging before your face and the rest of your body. And that's because, for the last decades, you’ve probably been taking less care of your décolletage area than your face. But not only have the years of neglect made their mark on the skin below your chin. Your neck skin is drier, thinner and weaker than the skin on your face, and it’s also more susceptible to environmental factors and diet.

The neck and chest area is very complex. While your face mostly shows signs of aging in the form of wrinkles, dark spots, and fine lines, the area between the chin and the breasts show a much longer list of skin aging signs.

Neck Signs of Aging

Here are the 6 major signs of an aging neck, chest and décolletage.


Crepey neck is the thin, loose skin that looks like wrinkly crepe paper, hence the name. It's caused by the lack of collagen and elastin production as we age and the scarce amount of sebaceous glands on our neck that are responsible for producing natural oils. This leaves our skin saggy and crinkled.

Turkey neck is the loose skin that hangs from our neck, also caused by the thick banding of the platysma muscles that run from the chin to the collarbone, creating one big slab below our chins.


Vertical lines appear on our chests and are caused from sleeping on our side.


Also known as horizontal lines, this new phenomenon comes from looking down at our computer, phone or tablet.

This occurs because of the excess amount of weight we may carry and, as we age, fat on our face tends to drop down to the chin and jawline because of gravity.


Sunspots develop because we haven't been using moisturizer with SPF factor 30 on our neck and chest, like we do on our face, exposing this large area to sun damage.

So as you can see, some neck signs of aging happen on the skin while others are produced under the skin, requiring a holistic plan of action.

Let me tell you that Crepey neck, turkey neck, and all other signs of an aging neck are reversible. We can slow down the signs of aging and we can even reverse the signs of aging on our neck.

How to Fix An Aging Neck

The holistic plan I recommend is based on 3 key pillars that address the neck skin, the muscles, and fat stores.

  1. 1. Tighten the neck skin with a neck firming cream:

Incorporate your neck and chest into your daily skincare routine. But a face cream can’t do a neck cream’s job, so you need an anti-aging cream specially designed for the neck area. These creams will boost hydration, replacing the natural oils your neck is not producing, and also deliver collagen and elastin to strengthen the skin’s structure.

The right neck firming cream will visibly reduce crepey neck, turkey neck, vertical and horizontal lines, and sunspots. For best results, apply it morning and evening.

I recommend 3 easy and quick exercises and stretches that you can do anytime, anywhere. Don’t tell anyone but I do them when I pee. They will tone the muscles of your jawline and neck to help reduce turkey neck and double chin, giving your skin the inner support it needs.

Neck Yoga Exercise #1 - The Kiss

  1. • While sitting or standing, tilt your head back and look toward the ceiling.
  2. • Pucker your lips and “kiss the ceiling.”
  3. • Hold the kiss for five seconds.
  4. • Relax your lips and return your head to a neutral position.
  5. • Repeat this 3 times.
  6. • This time, pucker your lips again, lift your face toward the ceiling, and kiss the sky 10 or more times.


Neck Yoga Exercise #2 - Side Pout

  1. • Turn your head to the right and then tilt it back, feeling the stretch down the left side of your neck.
  2. • Hold for 5 to 10 seconds and release.
  3. • Repeat the process with your head turned to the left, tilting it back.
  4. • Then, turn your head to the upper right, about 45 degrees, pucker your mouth to the right, really hard. Feel the stretch on the left front of your neck. Tilt your head back for an extra stretch.
  5. • Hold for 5 seconds and return to center.
  6. • Turn your head to the upper left, about 45 degrees, pucker your mouth to the left, really hard.
  7. • Repeat 3 times on both sides.
  8. • Do not push too hard or hold your breath! If you have neck pain, try practicing slowly and feel the stretch.


Neck Yoga Exercise #3 - Tongue Stretch

  1. • Looking straight ahead, stick your tongue out as far as you can.
  2. • Lift your tongue upward and toward your nose.
  3. • Hold for 10 seconds and release.
  4. • Then breathe in and look up to the ceiling
  5. • Stretch your tongue upward and move it from side to side 10 times.

  1. 3. Give the neck more definition by reducing fat stores:

As we age, we tend to store more fat around the jawline. This is because we may have put on some extra pounds over the years and because, over time, the fat stored in our faces tends to fall towards our neck.

When I dropped 20 pounds, I was amazed how my double chin disappeared.
